9-218 (6/8/22) -- Local Produce

Today was another hot day. I stayed inside doing laundry and household accounting. I was somewhat behind on the latter, but managed to get through much of the backlog. This made it clear just how much costs increased over the past several months.

I have found staples that are less expensive, but even those have increased significantly in the last quarter -- things like bread, milk, eggs and such. I've been trying to get back to more vegetarian meals each week like before the pandemic. The current economy supports the move back to vegetable protein sources. I enjoy legumes and generally have cajun red beans, veggie chili, veggie burgers and such in the freezer waiting for reheating on warmer summer days. I didn't get these items made before the recent heat waves, so have had to work with fish, poultry or meat more often than usual.

I was excited to read that the local Farmers Market have brought back the Wednesday evening market. It runs from 4 PM to 7 PM  with fewer vendors, but the basics can be found. I look forward to summer onions -- red if I can get them, squash -- pattypan is one of my faves, early tomatoes -- some great smaller varietals, and edible pot peas. Others might also be there like the bakers and Indian curry hot or frozen meals. I look forward to getting some local products. <smile>

Thinking about the potential to get to an evening market this summer brought one song to my brain. It is a ode to the farmers, even though there are many stereotypes included. Keep safe. Enjoy!
