9-213 (1/8/22) -- Freedom

Today marked Emancipation Day. On August 1, 1834 -- 133 years ago -- the Slavery Abolition Act came into force, effectively ending slavery within most of the British Empire. This year the date coincided with the August long weekend in nine provinces and territories -- names vary by province. Here it is Natal Day and elsewhere it is known as British Columbia Day, Heritage Day, New Brunswick Day, Saskatchewan Day, Terry Fox Day and the mundane Civic Holiday. Over supper with a friend, we watched the televised special commemorating this historic event and discussing what the term 'freedom' meant to many people. Music and dance numbers were interspersed between the small group discussions. I'm hoping it will be available on the network website for those who missed it tonight.

I chose one song to share here tonight. They were all so heartfelt, but this one speaks to how the journey of a single person can affect that person or others that come after them. The artist contextualized this well during the special.I enjoy this Canadian singer -- such power. Keep safe. Enjoy!

I Traveled -- Jully Black
