Yesterday a conversation about trust and vulnerability, shared by a good friend, got me thinking. Her conversation ddelved into whether it is a chicken and egg thing? To me these definitely are not linear constructs with one following the other. To trust one must be vulnerable and to be vulnerable one must trust. These two constructs are inextricably intertwined.
Interestingly, a few minutes later I found a post another friend shared on her social media feed. The quote stated, "Imagine if we measured success by the amount of safety that people felt in our presence." Now this fit well with my pondering of the other discussion. To feel safe, we must have trust. To help others feel safe, we must recognize their vulnerability and actually see them so they feel safe. It is more than building rapport. Both parties will experience vulnerability and trust in varying degrees as a safe space is being created.
I chose a song with lyrics noting the importance of helping others -- something that relies on the entwined concepts of vulnerability and trust. I like the upbeat nature of this song. Keep safe. Enjoy!
